Circa 2009, a small family company was born in Ontario. Created and run entirely by a mother and son, they made food, purées and baked goods from scratch every day for infants and toddlers. They sourced all of their produce from local organic farms, processed the produce themselves, and turned everything into healthy, nutritious meals, baked goods, snacks and finger foods which were frozen into portioned sizes. All food waste was diverted to a compost pile they maintained themselves, turning everything they didn’t use into healthy soil for new produce.
As a small, family business, custom made boxes and packaging were not an option. Instead, I was able to source biodegradable containers and bags from a local eco-friendly package supplier, and created label designs that would work with these packages.
Infant Organics was the first of its kind and, as a result, they had to educate the local population as to why feeding your child this type of food was better than purchasing conventional jarred foods from the grocery store. Parents eventually began asking for the meals to be made into adult portions as well, and a new company, (Family First) was formed out of Infant Organics.
The following images show the branding and label design created for Infant Organics, as well as food photography done for promotional and in-store advertisements. Everything was designed with a sense of humour to make the packaging fun, unique and stand out from typical children’s packaging. The owners were exceptional in conceptualizing clever names for the food and were open to quirky illustrations and poster designs. They were dream clients.
